Weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing we can do to prevent or minimize damage to your home when disaster does strike. A flooded basement, missing shingles or detached gutters can all put your home at great risk so we must do our best to decrease the chances of their occurrence. Here are a few ways you can do just that.
1. Keep your roof well-maintained. If you do not schedule a thorough inspection of your roof at least once a year, then you could be in big trouble once a storm hits. Your roof bears the brunt of extreme weather so it is critical that you keep it well-maintained. Work with a trusted local roofer that can give you an honest assessment of your roof’s condition without upselling you on products you don’t need.
2. Keep your gutters clean. We know that this is a chore many homeowners dislike, but cleaning out your gutters and drains will ensure that they can handle heavy snow or rain during storms. While you’re at it, you should also do a quick inspection for rust, leaks, holes and corroded joints. If you discover any problem areas, be sure to call in a gutter repair company right away.
3. Review your insurance policy. A lot of homeowners assume that just because they have insurance, they are protected from inclement weather. This is simply not true. Standard homeowners insurance may help cover certain causes of storm damage, but not others. Evaluate your insurance policy, and note what they cover so that you don’t get unpleasantly surprised down the road.
