8 Common Sources of Roof Damage

Your roof protects your home from the elements, but it can take quite a beating in the process. From fallen tree limbs to broken shingles and even Mother Nature, various elements can harm your roof. As a homeowner, it’s essential to be aware of such threats to prevent damage. Here are eight of them.

1. Fallen Tree Limbs

Tree limbs hanging over your roof pose a serious threat. Strong winds or a severe storm can make them fall, causing significant damage to your residential roofing. Make sure to trim overhanging branches to protect your roof.

2. Broken Shingles

Broken or missing shingles expose your roof to various elements like rain, snow, wind and sun. This not only affects the insulation of your home but also promotes water leakage, leading to potential structural damage.

3. Excessive Rainwater

Rainwater can create havoc if your home’s gutters are not properly maintained. Blocked gutters prevent water from flowing away from your roof, thereby causing water to pool. Over time, this can lead to leaks and, ultimately, substantial roof damage.

4. Hail

Hail can pelt your roof with the force of a hammer, causing cracks, dents or dislodged shingles. The damage from hail can be incremental but might require a full roof replacement over time.

5. Sun Exposure

The scorching heat of the sun can degrade your roofing material over time, making it brittle and prone to cracks. Constant exposure to UV rays can lead to the deterioration of both your residential siding and roofing.

6. Snow and Ice

Snow and ice accumulation can create a significant weight on your roof. The melting and refreezing of snow also cause ice dams in gutters, which prevent proper drainage and can lead to water infiltration.

7. Moss and Algae

Algae and moss thrive in damp, shaded areas and can cause discoloration and damage to your roof. These organisms retain moisture against the surface of your roof, which can cause wood to rot and shingles to lift.

8. Birds and Animals

Birds, squirrels and other animals can cause roof damage by dislodging shingles, blocking gutters with nesting materials or chewing through your roof’s surfaces.
