Asphalt Shingle Blisters: Causes and Solutions

Blisters are a common problem with asphalt shingles. There are two main reasons why asphalt shingles blister: trapped moisture in the shingles and poor ventilation in the attic.

Here are the causes and the solutions of this problem.

Trapped Moisture in the Shingles

On extremely rare occasions, moisture can get trapped inside the shingles during the manufacturing process. If asphalt shingles on a roof have trapped moisture, they become more prone to blistering. This is because as the sun beats down on the roof, the moisture within the shingles heat up as well, causing bubble-like marks to rise up and form on the shingles.

Poor Ventilation in the Attic

An attic that is not adequately ventilated can get too hot for asphalt shingles. If the heat that naturally rises from the living areas of the home and into the attic has nowhere to go, it will affect the structural components of the residential roofing, including the asphalt shingles, causing them to blister.

How to Prevent Blisters From Popping

If the asphalt shingles on your roof are blistering, it is important to monitor and prevent the blisters from popping. Here are some tips:

  • Do not walk on blistered shingles. Blisters can pop when disturbed by foot traffic.
  • Prune trees away from your roof. Pine cones, tree limbs and other debris can cause blisters to pop.
  • Replace the asphalt shingles. There is no way to restore a blistering shingle. An effective solution is to simply replace the affected shingles before they pop and cause leaks and water damage to your home.
