How to Mitigate Winter Roof Damage

Winter can be tough on your roof. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures put your home’s exterior at risk, leading to issues like leaks, structural damage, and energy loss. Fortunately, taking these preventive steps can help protect your roof from winter’s harsh conditions and extend its lifespan.

Regular Roof Inspections

Before winter hits, have your roof inspected by a professional. Look for damaged or missing shingles, cracks, and areas where the underlayment is exposed. Identifying and addressing small issues early can prevent more significant problems from developing once the snow and ice arrive.

Keep Your Gutters Clean

Clogged gutters can lead to water backup and ice dams, which can damage shingles and cause leaks. Clean your gutters of leaves, twigs, and other debris to ensure proper drainage. If necessary, install gutter guards to reduce future buildup and improve water flow.

Remove Snow and Ice Accumulation

Excessive snow buildup on the roof can lead to structural damage or create dangerous ice dams at the eaves. Use a roof rake with a long handle to gently remove snow from the roof, starting from the edge and working your way up. Avoid using sharp tools that could damage shingles. For ice dams, consider using calcium chloride or a similar product to melt the ice and prevent further buildup.

Check for Proper Attic Insulation and Ventilation

Proper attic insulation and ventilation are crucial to prevent ice dams. Poor insulation leads to heat escaping into the attic, which can cause snow on the roof to melt and refreeze at the eaves. Make sure your attic is well-insulated and has adequate ventilation to maintain consistent roof temperature and reduce the risk of ice dams.

Trim Overhanging Branches

Trim any branches that hang over the roof to prevent them from falling and causing damage during heavy snow or ice storms. This will also help prevent leaves and debris from accumulating in your gutters and on your roof.

Seal Cracks and Leaks

Before winter, seal any small cracks in your roof or flashing with waterproof roofing sealant. This can help prevent water from seeping in and causing damage during winter storms. Make sure to use products specifically designed for roofing to ensure durability and weather resistance.
