How Much Siding Do You Need?

Determining how much siding you need for your home is essential for a successful and cost-effective renovation. Accurate measurements help you avoid buying too much or too little, saving money and time. Here’s a guide on how to calculate the right amount of siding for your project.

Understanding Siding Coverage

Siding is typically sold by the square foot or in panels. To calculate how much siding you need, you first need to understand the coverage per panel or square foot. Standard panels often cover around 30 to 40 square feet, but this can vary based on the type of siding you choose (e.g., vinyl, wood, fiber cement).

Measuring Your Home’s Exterior

Start by measuring the height and width of each wall of your home. Divide the house into sections (e.g., front, back, and sides) to make measurements more manageable. Multiply the height by the width of each wall to get the total square footage for that section. Add the square footage of all sections to find the total exterior area.

Accounting for Windows and Doors

Subtract the area of windows and doors from your total measurement. This can be done by multiplying the height and width of each window or door and summing their total areas. Deduct this total from your overall square footage to get a more accurate siding requirement.

Adding a Safety Margin

It’s recommended to add 5-10% more siding to account for cuts, overlaps, and errors. This margin ensures you don’t run out mid-project and allows for any mistakes or adjustments.

Example Calculation

Let’s say you have a house with four walls, each measuring 20 feet × 30 feet. The total exterior area would be 20 × 30 × 4 = 2,400 square feet. If your windows and doors total 400 square feet, subtract that: 2,400 – 400 = 2,000 square feet. Adding a 10% safety margin gives you 2,200 square feet of siding needed.
