Today’s siding products offer a wide selection of colors, which lets homeowners choose a truly custom exterior color palette. However, a wide selection can also make it difficult to narrow down your choices. In today’s post, The Badger Company shares the questions you should ask yourself when choosing a siding color.
If your home is based on a specific style, taking the time to look up its history can help you narrow down your color selection. It can even give your home a more authentic look, as some traditional architectural styles are associated with certain color palettes. Colonial homes are traditionally painted in white or pastel colors, while Cape Cod homes are associated with gray or white siding paired with bright greens or blues.
Siding and roofing form the two largest parts of your home’s exterior, so it only follows that their colors should complement each other. Unless you are planning on getting a new roof along with your siding, you’ll want the latter to be in harmony with your existing roof.
We all want our houses to stand out, but not like a sore thumb. Take a walk or drive around a few blocks to get an idea of your neighbors’ color choices. More importantly, pay attention to the houses that look off or call too much attention to themselves — these are colors that you’ll want to avoid. If you live in a community governed by a HOA, you may look up the CC&Rs (covenants, conditions and restrictions), which may already have a list of pre-approved exterior colors.
Your siding may look different depending on the lighting. Ask your siding contractor if they can provide samples of their siding, then view them during different times of the day. This can help you narrow down your choices further, especially when you still have a few colors on your shortlist.
